Keith P. McColpin has an impressive career in technology and telecommunications, working for various prestigious companies. He’s been working for EdgeConneX, Inc. as Sr. Director, National Program Management, for 12 years. EdgeConneX has built and delivered a full spectrum of custom-built data center solutions worldwide. The company has built more than 80 data centers.

His Career at EdgeConneX

McColpin’s responsibilities at EdgeConneX are varied. He was tasked with putting together a team to design, construct, and manage fiber backhaul infrastructure into over 2000 cellular sites across Ohio. He was responsible for developing and staffing real estate, program management, and construction departments and establishing relationships with outside vendors for support services. He then took over operational management of data centers in PA, MI, TN, WI, LA, and TX. His duties included oversight of construction expansion projects, implementation of facility safety and environmental programs, 24×7 response to all facility alarms and customer tickets, as well as ongoing maintenance of critical equipment. He then transitioned into leading the planning and execution of multiple large-scale data center construction projects, ensuring on-time delivery and adherence to budget constraints. He has worked on a variety of projects that included everything from the expansion of existing data center facilities to greenfield construction of new data centers with budgets in the $125M-$800M range.

Keith McColpin brings deep experience from his roles prior to EdgeConneX, including those with FiberTower Corp., Teligent, Inc., Nextel, and Westinghouse Communications.

McColpin’s Career with FiberTower

At FiberTower, McColpin was Senior Operations Manager of its Midwest Markets, which included Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois. FiberTower was a leader in wireless backhaul services, managed fiber networks, and offered spectrum leases for microwave backhaul. During his eight years with FiberTower, McColpin was responsible for the planning, implementation, and operation of hybrid backhaul networks (both TDM and Ethernet) comprised of licensed microwave links and managed optical transport. He reviewed and approved network design and was responsible for vendor selection, management, and operational control of 1100-plus deployed microwave tower locations. He acted as a company climbing certification instructor and climbed communication towers during his tenure. He also established and maintained positive customer and vendor relationships, as well as planned and managed budgets and P&L.

McColpin’s Career with Teligent Communications

McColpin worked for six years at Teligent Communications, where he began as the Midwest Operations Manager and was promoted to Director of Operations within two years. Teligent was a leading supplier of CLEC and value-added services to telecommunication operators. It provided customers worldwide with network services, call completion solutions, enterprise services, mass calling systems, and multipoint microwave backhaul. During his time with Teligent, McColpin was responsible for managing field operations and construction in a four-state region, which included switch facilities in Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis. He handled customer service, troubleshooting, network design and implementation, and regional deployment goals. His achievements with Teligent included initiating process improvements and streamlining the workforce to produce positive customer service results while surpassing targeted budget goals, having the first Teligent market launch on time and under budget, and ranking first in the cities he oversaw in line installations per employee, customer satisfaction, and with the lowest customer disconnect rate.

McColpin’s Career with Nextel

Prior to Teligent, Keith was the MSO Operations Manager for Nextel Communications in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At that time, Nextel was a telecommunications company based in California that was later acquired by Sprint. At Nextel, his managerial duties included supervising multiple DMS SNSE switching centers, OMC control centers, and associated personnel. His position included vendor coordination, facility management, installation planning, and day-to-day maintenance of switch operation centers.

McColpin’s Career at Westinghouse Communications

At Westinghouse Communications, he worked as a Network Engineer for three years. McColpin operated DMS-250 Supernode tandem switches, including maintenance and translation work, along with installing DS-1s, channel banks, CSUs, and related equipment. He assisted in the planning of new switch installations, software upgrades, and network expansions and was involved in all aspects of Switched 56 applications, including video conferencing equipment installation, multipoint bridging operations, and network troubleshooting.

He began his career at Sperry-Sun Drilling Services in Louisiana as an MWD Field Engineer, and prior to that served in the United States Navy.

Keith P. McColpin has received numerous awards for his performance. He has received over half a dozen quarterly recognition awards at EdgeConneX for his personal contributions to the success of the company. He was also a Teligent President’s Circle Winner, FiberTower “CREATE” Award Winner 2010, FiberTower “CREATE” Circle of Excellence winner 2009, FiberTower “CREATE” Award Winner 2008, FiberTower Network Quality Award winner 2007, FiberTower “Achievers Club” winner in 2005 and 2006, and selected for the Nextel Service Deployment Achievement Award, and the Westinghouse PGBU Excellence Award.

McColpin graduated from Carnegie-Mellon with a Bachelor of Science in Physics.

On a Personal Note

Keith P. McColpin, along with his brothers Glenn and Brian, grew up in Buffalo, New York. He has two sons, Austin and Zak. His hobbies range from mountain biking and hiking to woodworking, residential architectural design, home improvement projects, photography, guitar playing, and PC gaming.
